In this the inaugural conference organized under the auspices of the Ithmaar research and consultancy group, we aim to provide the leading forum for debate on issues of importance to the Middle East region. Through a structured programme of research presentations, seminars, workshops, panel discussions, posters, demonstrations and exhibition, it is intended that participants will gain new insights, knowledge and competencies of relevance to the betterment of life for the peoples of the Gulf and the wider Middle East. Scholars and policy makers will have the opportunity to engage in discussion on the pressing problems facing the long-term viability and sustainability of the region, including considerations for diversity and well-being of local communities in reaction to the challenges posed by growing globalization and development.
